What to expect from the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

With just three months until the 2024 election, thousands are expected to assemble in Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention.

It is a custom that dates back to the 1830s, when a group of Democratic delegates supporting President Andrew Jackson met in Baltimore to nominate him for a second term.

This year will be a little different than previous, as the Democratic Party has already officially selected Vice President Kamala Harris in a virtual roll call after President Joe Biden stepped out of the contest.

However, many other DNC traditions, including as celebrity appearances and notable speeches by party leaders, will stay unchanged. Here's what you should know.

Do you know where and when the DNC is?

This year's convention will be held in the United Center Arena in Chicago from Monday, August 19 to Thursday, August 22.

Around 50,000 individuals will come to Chicago for the DNC.

What occurs during the DNC?

Because Ms Harris and Mr Walz have already been nominated, this year's convention will be centered on speeches by notable Democrats and the approval of the party's program.

Delegates work during the day to finalize the platform, a draft of which has already been made available.

It addresses a wide range of concerns, including measures to reduce inflation, ameliorate climate change, and combat gun violence. In the draft, Democrats compare each of the party's positions to Project 2025, an ultra-conservative blueprint for a second Trump presidency created by the Heritage Foundation. Trump has tried to disassociate himself from the project, despite the fact that numerous of his associates helped write it.

Who will speak?

Dozens of notable Democrats and celebrities will take the stage in Chicago.

On Monday night, President Biden will give the convention's keynote address. The audience will also hear from First Lady Jill Biden, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, and other Democratic leaders.

Former President Barack Obama is set to offer remarks on Tuesday.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Ms Harris' husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, will also speak at the conference on Tuesday.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi are reportedly among those scheduled to appear on Wednesday.

Ms Harris' running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will deliver the prime-time speech the night after his nomination.

The most significant night of the convention is Thursday, when Vice President Harris takes the podium. On the final night of the convention, she will formally receive the presidential nomination and deliver a speech titled "For the Future."

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will all appear on stage at some time this week.

Not only will famous politicians appear, but others will as well. The convention will also hear from average Americans, including Trump supporters.

 Who else will attend?

This year's event in Chicago is expected to attract approximately 50,000 attendees. This includes thousands of delegates chosen by state Democratic parties, as well as superdelegates, who are key elected officials, prominent Democratic Party members, and certain Democratic National Committee members.

Thousands of members of the media will also attend.

It will be a star-studded gathering with various celebrities. In 2020, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Eva Longoria attended the event, while Elizabeth Banks and America Ferrera did so in 2016.

Rumours have circulated that mega-stars Beyoncé and Taylor Swift may attend this year, but neither has confirmed.

Will there be a demonstration or protest?

Demonstrations are scheduled outside the DNC venue, with many centered on protest to the United States' backing for Israel's conflict in Gaza. Organisers have stated that up to 10,000 individuals may attend the march. Protesters have been wrangling with the city of Chicago over where they may hold demonstrations.

How can the general public observe?

Members of the public can only attend the conference in person if they volunteer.

C-SPAN, along with major television networks, will cover speeches and events.

Additionally, for the first time, the conference intends to provide vertical streaming of events on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, allowing fans to watch on their phones.
