Shock and Intrigue: Soldier Arrested for Murder in Mysterious Death of Sergeant at Missouri Base

Shock and Intrigue

A soldier has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a fellow service member at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, according to an announcement by the Army on Thursday.

Spc. Wooster Rancy, a 21-year-old soldier, was charged on Wednesday by the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel with murder and obstructing justice in the death of Sgt. Sarah Roque, 23. Sgt. Roque, a mine-detecting dog handler from Ligonier, Indiana, was reported missing on October 20. Two days later, her body was found in a trash bin on the military base.

Officials at Fort Leonard Wood stated last week that they were treating Roque's death as a homicide, and a person of interest was taken into custody the previous Thursday. They also emphasized that there was no broader threat to base personnel or the surrounding community.

However, Army investigators have released limited information regarding the circumstances of Roque's death, including the cause and any potential motive.

The suspect, who hails from North Miami, Florida, enlisted in the Army in 2022. He serves as a combat engineer with the 509th Clearance Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, and completed his basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood. Rancy is currently being held in pretrial confinement and is awaiting a preliminary hearing.

Sgt. Roque enlisted in 2020 and received several awards and decorations, including the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. She was also a member of the 5th Engineer Battalion.
