A Family Dollar store on North Main Street in Dayton will close its doors later this month, a decision that has some local residents concerned about the area’s limited shopping options.
Located at 1130 N. Main St., near Helena Street and about a mile north of downtown Dayton, the Family Dollar is set to close on Nov. 23. The store has begun offering discounts of 20% this week, with plans to increase discounts to 30% next week and 40% in its final week.
“This is a huge loss not only for Riverdale but for surrounding neighborhoods as well,” said Victoria McNeal, president of the Riverdale Neighborhood Association.
Shoppers cited frequent shoplifting as a potential reason for the closure. One store employee confirmed that theft had impacted the store’s profitability, aligning with similar challenges faced by other locations.
Earlier this year, another Family Dollar in northwest Dayton closed amid a wave of retail chain shutdowns affecting stores struggling to maintain profits. Karen Caudill, a 55-year-old Dayton resident, expressed disappointment at the upcoming closure. She noted that Family Dollar’s selection and low prices made it a valuable resource, particularly for hard-to-find items like Tangy Pickle Dorito chips.
Caudill’s daughter, Amanda Sizemore, praised Family Dollar’s competitive prices, even when compared to other discount retailers like Walmart. Caudill shared that her other daughter and grandchildren frequently shop at the North Main Street location for essentials, including food, drinks, and baby supplies.
“I hate it for my kids and grandkids because they shop here all the time,” Caudill said.
McNeal echoed these sentiments, saying that while the store has had issues with theft, staffing, and cleanliness, it underwent renovations last year and appeared to maintain a steady customer base. She noted that a store clerk confirmed the closure is due to theft-related losses.
“They were here for a long time and served the community well,” McNeal added.
Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, announced plans to close hundreds of Family Dollar locations across the country this year, including one on N. James H. McGee Blvd. that shut down earlier this year. Ohio previously had more than 400 Family Dollar stores, with around 25 in Montgomery County alone.
Other major retailers are also struggling, with Rite Aid recently announcing it would close all its Ohio stores.
