Chaos, Provocations, and Violence: How Attacks on Israeli Soccer Fans Unfolded
Antisemitic assaults on visiting Israeli soccer fans, combined with inflammatory chants and attacks by some Israelis, have stirred tensions. Here’s what is known so far about the recent violence in Amsterdam.
Early Thursday morning, taxi drivers gathered en masse outside Amsterdam’s Holland Casino. Earlier that night, Israeli soccer fans had reportedly stolen and burned a Palestinian flag, while some had attacked a taxi. According to police, the taxi drivers were responding to an online call to “mobilize.”
Inside the casino, hundreds of Israeli fans were waiting for local police to escort them back to their hotels. Authorities reported confrontations in the area.
One Israeli fan, who gave only his first name, Barak, described encountering a young man in the casino with cuts on his hands and face, who said he’d been ambushed by men on scooters. “His whole face was covered in blood,” Barak said in an interview on Friday.
