Spain is deploying an additional 5,000 soldiers and 5,000 police officers to the eastern region of Valencia following devastating floods earlier this week that claimed the lives of over 200 individuals, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Saturday.
To date, 205 bodies have been recovered—202 in Valencia, two in the neighboring Castilla La Mancha, and one in Andalusia in the south—marking Spain’s deadliest natural disaster in recent memory. Rescuers continue to search for victims in abandoned vehicles and inundated buildings four days after the catastrophic flash floods swept through eastern Spain, leaving behind widespread destruction. The exact number of missing persons remains unknown.
Thousands of volunteers are actively participating in cleanup efforts, working to remove the thick mud that has covered streets, homes, and businesses in the most affected towns. Currently, approximately 2,000 soldiers are engaged in emergency operations, along with nearly 2,500 Civil Guard officers who have conducted 4,500 rescues during the floods, and 1,800 national police officers.
