Donald Trump announced on Sunday night that Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will serve as his “border czar” in his second administration. Homan will be responsible for overseeing mass deportations, as pledged by Trump, and managing security at the southern border, northern border, and other key areas.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said, “I am pleased to announce that former ICE Director and border control expert, Tom Homan, will join the Trump Administration as our ‘Border Czar.’ His role will encompass not only the Southern and Northern borders but also maritime and aviation security.”
Trump praised Homan, stating, “I’ve known Tom for years; he’s the best at securing our borders. Tom will also oversee deportations, ensuring illegal aliens are returned to their home countries. Congratulations to Tom—I’m confident he’ll do an outstanding job.”
During Trump’s first term, Homan strictly enforced immigration policies, a role he’s expected to continue. In July, Homan announced his intention to lead the largest deportation operation in U.S. history if Trump returns to office, saying, “When Trump is back in January, I’ll be right there, leading the biggest deportation effort this country has ever seen.”
Trump’s 2024 campaign emphasized border security, with plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants to reverse policies enacted under Biden’s administration. Homan said in a recent interview that the deportation operation would be well-planned and humane, with experienced ICE personnel at the forefront.
Homan’s appointment as “border czar” does not require Senate confirmation. He will replace Vice President Kamala Harris, who managed immigration issues under Biden and made only two visits to the southern border.
Trump defeated Harris in last week’s presidential election, securing 312 electoral votes, surpassing both his 2016 win and Biden’s 2020 victory. Alongside Homan, Trump recently appointed his longtime campaign manager, Susie Wiles, as his new White House chief of staff.
