Chinese President Xi Jinping Makes Short Visit to Morocco to Strengthen Bilateral Ties
Chinese President Xi Jinping made a brief visit to Morocco on Thursday, according to state media from both nations.
President Xi was welcomed in Casablanca by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, reflecting the strong bonds of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity between the Moroccan and Chinese peoples, as noted by Morocco's official news agency, MAP.
Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan and Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch greeted Xi at the airport, where the Crown Prince and the Chinese leader engaged in a "cordial conversation," according to China's state broadcaster, CCTV.
The visit followed Xi's participation in the G20 Summit in Brazil and highlighted China’s growing interest in Morocco as a strategic partner.
In recent years, China has significantly increased investments in Morocco, particularly in the infrastructure and rail sectors. Morocco’s geographic proximity to Europe, its free trade agreements with key EU and U.S. markets, and its established automotive industry have made it an attractive destination for Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturers.
In June, Chinese EV battery maker Gotion High Tech announced plans to build Africa's first gigafactory in Morocco, with an investment of $1.3 billion.
