Controlled Explosion Conducted Near US Embassy in London After Suspect Package Found
British police conducted a controlled explosion near the US Embassy in London on Friday after discovering a suspicious package, according to authorities.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed, “We can confirm that the 'loud bang' reported in the area a short time ago was a controlled explosion carried out by officers.” The police added that investigations are ongoing, and cordons around the area will remain in place for now.
Earlier in the day, the US Embassy reported entering lockdown due to a security threat, sources close to the matter told The Jerusalem Post.
The Metropolitan Police initially stated they were investigating a suspect package and had implemented cordons around the area, located south of the River Thames. They also acknowledged widespread online speculation regarding the incident.
In a separate statement on X, the US Embassy noted that police had closed a road near the building “out of an abundance of caution.”
The incident coincided with other notable activity in the city, including C-130 Hercules aircraft flying near the London Eye as part of the Trooping the Colour parade in honor of King Charles’s official birthday.
