Russian Drone Attack on Ukrainian City of Sumy Leaves Two Dead, Twelve Injured
A Russian drone strike targeted the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy early Friday morning, killing two people and injuring twelve others, according to regional authorities.
The attack, which occurred around 5 a.m. local time (0300 GMT), caused significant damage, with twelve apartment buildings, five private houses, a store, and three vehicles affected, the national police reported.
Sumy regional governor Volodymyr Artiukh stated that Russian forces had equipped the drones with shrapnel to maximize casualties in the densely populated area.
"This weapon is designed solely to kill people," Artiukh said, pointing to scars left on a damaged building. "It is not aimed at facilities but intended to cause maximum human loss."
A video released by the Sumy regional military administration showed the aftermath of the attack, with images of shattered windows, damaged buildings, and vehicles.
The Sumy region has been heavily targeted in recent weeks, with deadly attacks on infrastructure and civilian areas.
Earlier this week, a drone strike on the town of Hlukhiv killed twelve people, including a child, during the night. On Sunday evening, a missile attack on Sumy resulted in 11 fatalities and 89 injuries, leaving the administrative center of the region without power.
The situation in Sumy reflects the ongoing escalation of violence in the region.
